The SERBU ‘Super Shorty’:  $600-700 range

This is the Serbu ‘Super Shorty’ – a modified 12-gauge shotgun.  The Super Shorty is compact, designed specifically for close quarters situations. It has a 16.5 inch total length, making it the smallest legal shotgun anyone can purchase in the United States.  The Serbu uses either a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 as its base.  It holds two 2 ¾” or 3″ shells.

 

Finer Points:

This firearm is perfect for one-on-one interaction.  It’s small enough to fit between the mattress and box spring or even in the top drawer of any dresser.  It holds 2 shells, as do most shotguns that don’t come equipped with an extension.  One of the wonderfully organic characteristics of a pump shotgun is the audible impression it gives off by simply racking a shell up into the chamber. Many times just the sound of a twelve gauge being ‘racked’ is reason enough for an intruder to hightail it outta dodge.  The Serbu SS packs one hell of a punch, you should certainly be aware of this.  There’s a lot of recoil coming out of this little bitch but that’s what makes it all the more impressive.  Regardless of who you are (male or female) you might want to spend some time getting used to this firearm or even giving one a test fire prior to purchasing it.  Many may think that the price tag for the Serbu doesn’t fall within the ‘reasonably’ priced bracket but we chose this little beauty based on the ‘bang for its buck’ philosophy.

Drawbacks:

To be honest the only drawback to owning a shotgun is just this – it’s a shotgun.  Shotguns spray lead pellets everywhere and can reck havoc on the surrounding environment. Pretty much whatever you aim at (especially in a close-quarters or a point-blank scenario) you’re going to hit.  As with all shotguns you have a multiple choices when it comes to types of shot available – birdshot (made for small game hunting), buckshot, for larger game hunting or the slug; one big fat lead ball that will completely annihilate whatever it sinks its teeth into.

We suggest using the ‘00 Buck‘ for home protection.  It does much more damage then the bird shot and covers a much wider area than the slug can.  And, it will definitely  leave an ever lasting impression on your target – literally. This can make for a rather nasty clean up process.  Remember this, the Coroners office will do one thing and one thing only; remove the body from your residence.  What they won’t do is scrape all the little bits of flesh and brain off your floor, ceiling or walls.  In this case, you might want to have the number for a crime scene clean-up company readily available.  There are plenty available out there but bear in mind that they are definitely costly.  Not to mention the interior cosmetic damage that comes along with firing such a weapon in-doors.  Who thought protecting you and your loved ones could come at such a hefty price?

Note:  The Serbu may seem very similar to the sawed off pump that Rico Tubbs carried on ‘Miami Vice’ back in the 80′s.  Tubbs actually had a modified Ithaca 37 Stakeout which was rather popular weapon used in television and films.
