Shot-Caller Jenna Haze
February 14, 2011
“I never thought of it as a job, you know? I mean, I work my ass off at it, but I still find a lot of fun in it every single day. I don’t dread going to work: I love going to work.”
How many of us can truly say this? For adult actress Jenna Haze this is her everyday philosophy. In a breezy, easy-laughing manner, this girl (who is known for performing some of the filthiest sexual acts known to humankind) discusses the most taboo things with an openness that is endearing and disarming.
“I feel so lucky to be able to do something like this and not have a regular boring job. It’s pretty cool that I get to go to work and get paid to have orgasms.”
Jenna is probably the most recognizable face (and body) working in Adult today. Sure, there are other starlets who have had success crossing over into mainstream endeavors, but to the true porn fan and avid connoisseur of perversion, Jenna Haze is it. Not only was she named the most popular Adult star by CNBC, but to those in the know she is the undisputed Queen of Gonzo, and with good reason. Her performances are the stuff of legend. She is gorgeous and utterly filthy; a perfect combination of sweet and sinful that derelicts worldwide adore. Her work on-camera is brilliant and blazing. She goes at every scene with an energy that is hardly rivaled by stars past and present. And she does just about everything you could want.
“I’ve never been shy about sex or anything; I’ve always been pretty forward with it. I used to really shock my mother when I was a teenager because I had such open and honest views on sex.”
This woman was born to be a porn star. From her earliest days she was a self-described ham, always in the center of things and always ready to pose for a picture.
“I was definitely outgoing. I was a very flirtatious, provocative kid. I was obsessed with Madonna and sexually powerful women like that. I used to steal lingerie out of my mom’s drawers and dance around to Madonna songs! I chased the boys around, but, at the same time I was really a nerd. I was always on the honor roll, at least up until junior high. I was very into books and video games. I guess I was an attractive nerd because I always seemed to attract the boys’ attention. When I got to junior high my grades really went down because I really got into boys. I started smoking pot and stuff, too. When you’re a kid and smoking weed you’re family life is kind of crazy. So I hung out with a lot of boys and all the girls thought I was a slut because all my friends were guys. The whole time in junior high, when these girls all thought I was banging their boyfriends I was really just getting stoned and playing video games with them!”
Throughout her storied career Ms. Haze has garnered many prestigious awards. She’s got a ton of AVNs and, perhaps more telling, legions of fans that are devoted to her career.
“My fans are so awesome,” gushes Jenna. “It’s so much fun for me to go out to these conventions and meet them. It’s really funny: some people shock me, some people freak me out and some people amaze me. It’s always an adventure. Every day is always different.”
While not exactly the “girl next door” type, Jenna is definitely not your stereotypical porn star, either. While Most Adult actresses have careers that span maybe two to four years. Jenna has managed to stay on top for almost a decade now through sheer determination and hard work.
“There are two kinds of work days for me,” she explains. “There’s the in-town, at-home days and then there are on the road days. On the road days are the complete opposite of at-home days. When I’m on the road, I usually do two to three weekends a month. I leave usually on Wednesday on a crazy late flight. I get into whatever town I’m going to and immediately begin working: interviews, promo stuff, radio stations, whatever. Then I get to sleep a little, wake up and go dance at the club, come back to the room and sleep, wake up and do the whole thing over again. On the last night of engagement I usually go right to the airport as soon as I’m done and fly straight home. As soon as I get home I go right into it; getting stuff done. My at-home days are more of the same type of hectic stuff. I work all the time. Shooting, editing… all that stuff. I spend a lot of time working on my website. It’s a full time job and then some. Somehow I try and fit all the normal, everyday stuff in there too: shopping, errands, etc. It’s very hectic. It’s a constant time-management battle. Now I’ve been in the business for ten years, so I kind of call the shots. I don’t want to do products for people I don’t like. Once in a while I will work for other people, but I want to do my own projects; I want to do my stuff. I want to have sex with the few guys that I really, really am turned on by; that really get me off. I want to create my own stuff.”
She is definitely driven, as evidenced by the 2009 creation of her own production company, Jennaration X Studios.
“When I started Jennaration X I wanted to make a gonzo company that was run by a woman and had pretty much no male influence but was directed at both a male and female audience. Which is really hard to do. You always end up getting the companies that are either totally soft and for couples or extreme hardcore for the guys. I wanted to do something that looked amazing and gorgeous and looked more like that high-end, Andrew Blake/Playboy, mainstream, stylish porn but still had really hot, passionate hardcore sex. You will see slapping, choking and that kind of stuff in my movies, but it’s definitely shot in a more artful way. I get more inspiration from mainstream outlets than I do from other porn and I try to stay away from all that cookie-cutter porn. I think the porn industry tends to stay in its own little bubble: they kind of get used to their one way of doing things, their routine, and they don’t look outside for their inspiration. I mean, I don’t even watch porn anymore! As far as the films: I’m just making what I like, what I’m into. This is who I am and this is what I put into my Jennaration X stuff. I never try to be anything I’m not: I have no plastic surgery, my hair’s real, my nails are real… I have no fake boobs, no fake lips, no Botox. I’m not into it; it’s not my thing. I really like the way I was born. ”
Her vision is one that has become a huge hit with fans. Jenna’s abilities to blend raw, hardcore sex with aesthetic beauty have paved the way for a new kind of gonzo. Beautiful women doing nasty things, excellent production values and, best of all, NO BULLSHIT!
“The thing is: I’ve been doing it for so long; I’ve done every kind of porn under the umbrella. I’ve done the features; I’ve done the super-hardcore gonzo stuff. I’ve done the parodies… really every kind of genre out there. I really have my heart stuck in the roots of gonzo, because that’s where I really developed myself and got my little niche formed. I really enjoy gonzo. The whole purpose for me in doing porn and making porn (and when I think of people watching porn) is to see sex. It’s not to see crazy acting or all these lavish sets and bad actors. It’s about the sex. If they want to see acting, drama, suspense, whatever, they’re going to watch a mainstream movie. They’re not going to watch porn for that. That’s why I like gonzo. Once in a while I do like doing a feature, just because I do like acting a little bit, but it’s not where my heart lies. My heart lies in gonzo. I think there are a lot of different aspects of sexuality that should be explored. There are women who like different things. I like to be choked, I liked to be slapped. I like to be forcefully fucked sometimes. It’s hot. It’s not something I’d want every day; there are many different aspects of sexuality that I prefer to portray at different times. But, as a woman, I like seeing and doing those things and I like having them done to me.”
Behind the scenes Jenna is becoming a force to be reckoned with, an accomplishment that has not been achieved without pitfalls. In a business run by men, owned, operated and made for men, being a woman trying to do something besides performing on camera is not the easiest route to take.
“There have been times where I’ve definitely run into people who don’t take me seriously in this business, especially when I first started Jennaration X. I don’t want to sound horrible, but a lot of the men in this business look down on the women. I mean, it’s kind of ingrained in this industry. They tend to not take a lot of the girls seriously, especially when they try to do something that is primarily and traditionally a man’s role in a man’s field. But, at the same time, this year at the AVN Awards I kind of hope I proved to people that I am very serious in what I do. I’m not just playing a game here or just get publicity. I’m really balls deep in this bitch!”
And with new ventures come new challenges.
“Being a director is a new challenge for me. The whole putting movies together is new to me, that’s why I started doing it in the first place. I felt like I had mastered performing and I needed to move on. But I’ve always been very headstrong and confident in taking control. My mom always told me I was kind of a bossy kid! I’ve always known what I wanted and have never been afraid to go after it. I think that definitely helps me do what I’m doing. But I’m definitely learning; every day I’m learning something new about running my company. You make mistakes and try to learn from them, just like anything else in life.”
In fact, Jenna is so committed to her company that she has risked her own career and financial standing to get it going.
“It’s not the easiest thing to do. I started the company with my own money. I don’t have investors. I financed and produced every movie myself. Most girls have investors or somebody, somewhere backing them. I just saved up my money until I was able to do it myself. I didn’t want to have anybody else involved. If it’s going to succeed I really want it to be all me. If it’s going to flop I really want it to be all me. I’ve just done what I wanted and what I think is hot, and so far it’s really worked out for me.”
It’s a risk whose importance should not be lost on the rest of the industry, particularly the women.
“It is difficult for women to succeed or have any power in this industry and it really shouldn’t be. These girls need to realize that they have all the power. We have the power to call the shots. Over the years girls I’ve known especially contract girls, have complained about shitty deals, signing bad contracts. A lot of times, especially when they are new, they don’t realize that they can change these contracts. They can negotiate the contracts and have stuff put in. Women have the product that is selling. We have the candy that the boys all want, why can’t we use that and really turn it around to benefit us? A lot of girls sell themselves short and don’t even realize they have the power to call the shots.” A lot of girls get into the business for the wrong reasons. They think it’s glamorous or they think it’s fast, easy money. While I really agree with the fact that porn is becoming more mainstream, more acceptable and you see references to porn everywhere, it’s also being very over-glamorized for the girls. And so they come into the business and they think it’s fun, parties, easy money… not something you have to think about. And it is something that will follow you for the rest of your life. You have to realize what you’re giving up vs. what you’re gaining. And if you do it right you could be gaining a lot. When I got into the business I knew that people were going to see this, I knew that I would never be able to hide it. People are always going to know. If I try to get another job later on down the line, people are always going to know that I’m the porn star. That’s going to follow you through life and you have to realize that before you start. They don’t realize that this is a business; a serious business. It’s a sexual business where you use your body, basically for currency, and you have to be ready to deal with that. It takes a really strong woman to get into the business, form it the way you want it and just run with it.”
All this work leaves one to wonder how she fits in time to live the crazy party lifestyle that we all think porn stars lead…
“It’s funny: people always automatically think that you’re having so much crazy sex all the time. Really, I don’t have that much sex. I don’t have too much time for a personal life. My social life is usually going to these events where I get to see my industry friends. People think we have sex all the time and the truth is, since I primarily work for my own company I shoot, at the most, two or three scenes a month. I mean, sure, when I first got in I was fucking on-camera every single day. Usually I am always working and just way too busy for a social life.”
Still, for Jenna Haze, her true passion lies in the work she does, the beauty she creates in her art. Amazingly, this petite little whirlwind has remained humble and thankful for all her success. She maintains a sense of accessibility about her that only adds to her beauty. And with her voracious drive and determination, we, as celebrated perverts, are sure to enjoy her vision for many years.
